High Court Halts Deportations With Emergency Order - The Monday AM Quickie 4/21/25

AMQ went to an emergency protest Friday evening in downtown New York to support the nearly 1,500 Consumer Financial Protection Bureau workers Trump and his Boer aide-de-camp Elon Musk laid off the day before. Though a judge halted the layoffs temporarily, workers at the protest said it was unclear how long that would last and described their fears that scammers will run wild without them on the beat. Among the people to take the stage was New York City Comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander, who told AMQ that debt refinancing and deed fraud are among the cons likely to rise. “Without the CFPB to enforce,” he said, “the predators will prowl.” -Whitney

THE BIG NEWS

Supreme Court Issues Late-Night Emergency Order Against Deportation Flight as Trump Tears Up Rule of Law

Supreme Court justices issued an unusual emergency order at 1 a.m. Saturday barring the Trump administration from deporting dozens of Venezuelan detainees held in Texas under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act. The single-page unsigned order included no explanation; conservative justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. dissented. Shortly before the order came down, Immigration and Customs Enforcement buses carrying the men to an airport suddenly turned around, NBC News reported on Sunday. It wasn’t clear where ICE was planning to send them. Officials told some of the men that they were going back to Venezuela. They told others the destination was El Salvador, home to Trump’s extraterritorial black site. The overnight order is “a sign that a majority of the justices have lost their patience with the procedural games being played by the Trump administration,” Georgetown Law professor Steve Vladeck told The Washington Post. Trump’s guard dog barked about the high court order to Politico, claiming Trump can do whatever he wants.

As Corey pointed out on Friday, it remains to be seen whether the legal system has the power to stop Trump and his plans to spend billions in taxpayer money creating a modern-day gulag archipelago and stuff it full of one million people by the end of this year alone. Plenty of gloomy signs point to no. Take, for example, the activity of ICE after a federal judge issued a restraining order against the enforcement of Senate Bill 4-C, the Florida law that made it a felony for certain immigrants to enter the state and mandated jail time without bond. But officials enforced it anyway, not only arresting and detaining 20-year-old US citizen Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez, but 15 other people, too. The reasoning? The federal judge’s temporary restraining order only applies to the parties in the suit, nobody else, said Robert Schenck, a lawyer representing the Florida Attorney General’s Office. “I am astounded and don’t understand this argument,” said U.S. District Judge Kathleen William, who issued the order.

“When I issued the temporary restraining order, it never occurred to me that police officers would not be bound by it,” she said. “It never occurred to me that the state attorneys would not give direction to law enforcement so that we would not have these unfortunate arrests.”

I hope judges and everyone else with power quickly gets over their surprise that Trump doesn’t respect them and then comes up with some consequences. We shouldn’t have to wait until May 2028 to end this tyranny.

All 50 States Protest The Mad King, Again

Protesters took to the streets across the country Saturday, on the 250th anniversary of the beginning of the American Revolutionary War and two weeks after the gigantic nationwide “Hands Off” protests, the Associated Press, The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Washington Post reported. Protesters planned more than 700 events for Saturday’s 50501 rallies, the Post said, many of which drew people objecting to Trump’s mass deportations and his illegal expulsion of Maryland dad Kilmar Abrego García. One Air Force vet who attended a protest in DC said he was worried about Trump’s cuts to Veterans Affairs, which he relies on for medical care. But it was García’s situation that made him take to the streets. It’s noteworthy that the media’s heaviest hitters are paying attention to protests and giving coverage prime homepage real estate instead of doing their usual thing of downplaying or outright ignoring them (although that’s still happening). Let’s see if they keep it up, because protesters are just getting started.

Executive Order Draft Would Erase State Dept. Presence in Africa

The New York Times and other outlets exposed a draft of a new executive order Sunday that would massively reorder the State Department by shuttering embassies and consulates across Africa, largely withdrawing from the continent, and eliminating offices that handle refugee issues, human rights concerns, and global warming. As one diplomat told Politico, the plan is “bonkers crazypants.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meanwhile, called it nothing but “fake news.” Depending on how much negative attention this leak gets, maybe we’ll see big changes to the executive order, or maybe it’ll get chalked up to just another little oopsie, and we won’t see it at all.

SOME NUMBER

490,000 miles

That’s the size of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument, a protected marine sanctuary that vulnerable fish, aquatic mammals, and sea turtles call home. For years industrial fishing was banned from the area. But not anymore. Destroyer-in-chief Trump issued a proclamation last week opening the area to US-flagged vessels so corporate interests can plunder it for profit.

PARTING WORDS

“They saw this person, he didn’t speak English particularly well, and so they arrested him and charged him with this law that no one [should] be charged with.”

-- Alana Greer, immigration attorney from the Florida Immigrant Coalition, discussing a federal judge’s recent hold on enforcing the Florida law against people illegally entering the state. Multiple people have been arrested under the law even though the hold means the law should not be enforced.
