Greenland in Trump’s Crosshairs

Trump plans to either buy Greenland or take it by military force. That’s the upshot of news coverage yesterday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers that Trump will offer to buy the island from Denmark, which has owned it for more than 300 years. Rubio made the claim Monday to lawmakers on armed services and foreign policy committees in both the House and the Senate but shared no further details, according to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Trump demanded aides deliver an updated Greenland plan the same day. 

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, meanwhile, said that Trump “has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region. The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the commander in chief’s disposal.”

Greenland has been on Trump’s mind for years. He talked about buying it during his first term because its abundant resources make it “a good economic play,” as the WSJ put it at the time, and because owning it would thwart China’s expansion in the region, as the AP pointed out yesterday. Project 2025 mentions Greenland a few times, such as on page 190, where it says that the administration should “pursue policies that enhance economic ties with Greenland because of its “geographic proximity and its rising potential as a commercial and tourist location.” 

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom rejected Trump’s imperialism. Along with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, they said Greenland “belongs to its people.” Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) proposed legislation to prevent a US takeover; his amendment to the Senate Defense Appropriations bill would “prohibit the use of funds for military force, the conduct of hostilities, or the preparation for war against or with respect to Greenland.” If the US attacks Denmark to seize Greenland, “everything would come to an end,” Frederiksen said yesterday. “The international community as we know it, democratic rules of the game, NATO, the world’s strongest defensive alliance – all of that would collapse if one NATO country chose to attack another.” 

Regime Revokes $10 Billion for Blue State Child Services

Trump continued his war on children by cutting off California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota and New York from $7 billion in funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, $2.4 billion for the Child Care and Development Fund, and about $870 million “for social services grants that mostly benefit children at risk,” according to the New York Times. Those programs serve hundreds of thousands of low-income households. A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services said welfare fraud cases in Minnesota prompted the punishment for the five Democrat-led states, though there is no evidence that the other four were involved in any way. But none of this is really about welfare fraud; it is about crushing Democrats. If it was about welfare fraud, then Trump would have yanked funding from Mississippi. That’s where former professional wrestler Ted DiBiase Jr. and others allegedly executed the largest public welfare embezzlement scheme in the state’s history, stealing $77 million from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. The trial for DiBiase began Tuesday. He faces multiple charges and decades in prison.  

Trump Rewrites History of Jan. 6 Insurrection, Blames Democrats, Media, Police

Yesterday marked the fifth anniversary of the Trump-led insurrection on the US Capitol, which Trump celebrated by publishing an “astonishingly misleading” new website that is so full of lies that the New York Times called it “a breathtaking reversal of reality.” The website “blames Capitol Police officers, who defended lawmakers that day, for starting the assault; Democrats, who were the rioters’ main targets, for failing to prevent it; and former Vice President Mike Pence, who rejected falsehoods about the 2020 election, for allowing the results to be certified.” Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, mocked coverage of the new website, saying on social media, “LOL! Can't believe MSDNC actually fell for our trap in covering the new January 6 page on the White House website.”

That’s at least how many pardoned Jan. 6 defendants have since been “charged, arrested, or convicted of new crimes,” according to the watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. On his first day back in office last year, Trump pardoned almost all of the 1,600 right-wing extremists charged or convicted in the insurrection.
