GOP Shuts Down House to Avoid Epstein, Runs Away For Next Five Weeks
Instead of confronting calls to release files on serial child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, House Speaker Mike Johnson decided to run away, the New York Times reported. He cancelled all the votes that were going to be held Thursday and is closing down the House for the rest of the summer; members get to go on their extended planned vacation early and will return in September. “We’re done being lectured on transparency,” he said.
Lazy Johnson’s announcement came right after the House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena Epstein conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell for a deposition and after Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said he was pursuing an interview with her. Shouldn’t the Department of Justice already have done that, given that just five months ago Attorney General Pamela Bondi said she was committed to “lifting the veil on the disgusting actions of Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirators”? Just asking questions. Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett proposed the motion because public testimony might shed light on the investigation, The Washington Post reported. “I want justice for those thousands of young ladies who were abused,” he said. “And I want the dirt bags of the world to know that we’re not going to tolerate it.”
But back to Johnson. To summarize: Johnson and his confederates stripped insurance away from millions of people, turbocharged the American Gestapo with billions of dollars, handed tax breaks to their rich friends, and are now headed out the door for five weeks, which is more time off than most people get in an entire year. Johnson had the gall to say that his decision to leave town was in service to Americans. Buddy, if you really want to serve the country, don’t come back.

The Justice Department fired US Attorney for the District of New Jersey Desiree Leigh Grace just hours after federal judges appointed her to the job rather than Trump’s choice, Alina Habba, ABC and The Washington Post reported. Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced the move on social media, praising Habba and saying “This Department of Justice does not tolerate rogue judges – especially when they threaten the President’s core Article II powers.” Article II is the constitutional provision giving presidents broad authority to make decisions. Trump has used it as a cudgel to argue that he should get to do whatever he wants.
Trump appointed Habba, his former personal attorney, as the acting US attorney in March. Her temporary term was to expire this week. As of last night, according to the Post, “it was not clear whether – or how – the judges would seek to enforce their order or whether Grace’s firing necessarily invalidated their appointment of her.”
Israel Has Killed 1,000 Palestinians Near Aid Sites Since May
The US-backed Israeli military has mostly killed people seeking aid from sites run by the US-Israeli aid organization/shooting gallery Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, according to the Associated Press. Meanwhile, people are starving to death because Israel refuses to let in food. Per the AP: “The U.N. World Food Program says Gaza’s hunger crisis has reached ‘new and astonishing levels of desperation.’ Ross Smith, the agency’s director for emergencies, told reporters Monday that nearly 100,000 women and children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and a third of Gaza’s population is going without food for multiple days in a row.”
