Fake Midwife Death Cult Thrived in Broken Medical System, Leaders Made Millions While Infants Died and Moms Bled Out
A pair of quacks with zero medical training lured pregnant people into their fold by promising an alternative to giving birth in abusive and expensive hospitals, the Guardian reported this weekend. In their remarkable year-long investigation, reporters chronicled how leaders of the Free Birth Society cult lied to expecting parents about medical complications during birth and manipulated them after horrific outcomes, including justifying the unnecessary deaths of multiple newborns. In other instances, babies denied medical intervention at birth developed irreversible brain damage and are now permanently disabled.
The cult’s leaders, founder Emilee Saldaya and fellow quack Yolande Norris-Clark, promote “pregnancy without any prenatal care” and German New Medicine, “which claims that disease is caused not by pathogens but by unresolved emotional conflicts.” They told followers to give birth without any medical support whatsoever and that “even contemplating a back-up plan was a sign of moral failure, because the truly sovereign woman trusted birth.” They used their social media to lure people whom the medical industry had disenfranchised, then exploited them for profit. Between 2020 and 2025, the pair ran multiple so-called schools teaching their deadly philosophy and generated more than $4 million in sales. A former employee told Guardian reporters that in 2024, the pair were making $160,000 a month from followers.
This story is important for many reasons, including that it illustrates how our medical system is an utter failure. A big reason “freebirthing” has any purchase is because people have lost trust in professional, for-profit healthcare, and even those who do trust it can’t afford it.
“It is a dynamic that is especially acute in the US, which has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among wealthy countries in the world. Experts point to a number of factors: lack of access to midwife-led care, an overly interventionist approach driven by fear of litigation and a desire, among healthcare providers, to maximize profit. A lack of universal healthcare means some women have to pay for home birth midwives. There is also a more medicalized approach to birth than in other developed countries with strong cultures of midwifery.”
To state the very obvious, the US medical system is a disaster and more cults like this will brainwash people desperate for care. We need a well-funded, fully staffed single-payer system.

World Leaders End Climate Talks With No Action on Fossil Fuel Phaseout
Instead of explicitly outlining how nations would halt the use of fossil fuel or cut emissions, the United Nations COP30 climate talks ended this weekend with nothing but a promise to send money to countries affected by extreme weather, the AP reported. Leaders said “they’d eventually come up with a road map to get away from fossil fuels,” though it is already too late for people around the world who have died in massive floods and other disasters. Per the AP:
Panama negotiator Juan Carlos Monterrey Gomez railed against the deal. “A climate decision that cannot even say ‘fossil fuels’ is not neutrality, it is complicity. And what is happening here transcends incompetence,” Monterrey Gomez said. “Science has been deleted from COP30 because it offends the polluters.”
Many nations and advocates wanted something stronger because the world will not come close to limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) since the mid 1800s, which was the goal the 2015 Paris agreement set.
Greene Departure Shrinks GOP Majority Even Further
Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the far-right, anti-semitic conspiracy theorist who identifies as a Christian nationalist, is resigning in January after her tussle with Trump over the Epstein files, ABC News and the NYT reported. Her departure will cut the Republican’s House majority to 218 against Democrats’ 213. Greene announced her resignation Friday on social media in a lengthy statement that repeatedly referenced that Trump said he no longer supports her. “Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for,” she wrote. Days before, Greene had blamed Trump for threats against her, including a pipe bomb threat at her construction company and a death threat against her son, NBC News reported. “President Trump’s unwarranted and vicious attacks against me were a dog whistle to dangerous radicals that could lead to serious attacks on me and my family,” Greene wrote. Her last day will be Jan. 5.
