THE BIG NEWS

Dissident Dems Boycott Bibi Speech

At least 58 Democrats plan to skip Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to Congress today. They are protesting the warm political welcome being given to a head of state who's presiding over a war in Gaza that international observers have called a genocide.

"This will be the first time in American history that a war criminal will have the honor of addressing a joint meeting of Congress," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, speaking from the Senate floor. "With this invitation, it's increasingly difficult, with a straight face, to lecture any country about human rights and dignity."

Other Democrats have criticized the decision by Republicans to invite Netanyahu to offer a major address during the height of a US presidential campaign. Rep. Jerry Nadler called Netanyahu "the worst leader in Jewish history since the Maccabean king who invited the Romans into Jerusalem over 2,100 years ago" (which is fair!). Still, Nadler said that he would attend the speech, believing that his "voice is more impactful in the room, holding the Prime Minister accountable."

"No U.S. official met [Netanyahu] at the airport when his plane landed," according to Slate. Vice President Kamala Harris won't attend the speech but will meet in private with the prime minister. As for Joe Biden, try again later in the week.

DC Resignations: Sen. Menendez and Secret Service Director Are Gone

Sen. Bob Menendez, the New Jersey Democrat who was recently convicted of a colorful array of felonies in a corruption and bribery trial, announced he is resigning his position and will leave the Senate next month. In an unrelated story that also manages to be an emblem of DC rot, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned. The Secret Service was widely criticized for failing to stop a gunman who fired on former President Donald Trump's July 13 rally in Butler, PA, wounding Trump and killing one attendee.

We Just Had the Hottest Day Ever

Sunday was the hottest day in recorded human history, according to European Union climate scientists. The global average air temperature was about 62.76 degrees Fahrenheit, topping a record set last year. Much of the planet north of the equator is currently experiencing extreme heat due to the advancing effects of climate change. Meanwhile, emissions are dropping in the U.S. – the renewable energy buildout and the Inflation Reduction Act have made a real difference – but not enough to reach the goals set in the Paris climate agreement.

That's how full one of Taiwan's major reservoirs is, as a multi-year drought has dried up rice paddies and prompted difficult decisions about water allocation. The island's water supply is particularly stressed because its massive semiconductor manufacturing industry uses a tremendous amount of water. Chip manufacturers are trying to decrease their water consumption, but the demand for their products – and their overall water usage – only grows.
