Dems Walz All Over Flailing Trump Campaign

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris officially introduced avuncular Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate yesterday at a rally in Philadelphia. Walz immediately demonstrated the qualities – a folksy, intelligent, regular guy with an all-American resume and an easy sense of humor – that have endeared him to voters across the Democratic Party coalition. As Walz stumped for a more positive political vision – and fired off a pretty good JD Vance couch joke – Harris looked on, beaming and applauding.

Walz's record will be deservedly picked apart by leftists and Republicans alike (albeit for different reasons). But so far, he seems like exactly the kind of enthusiastic normal-guy sidekick needed to push the Harris campaign forward. A military veteran (who's not a hawk), a teacher (who's married to a teacher), a high school football coach, an outdoorsman who pounds the podium on behalf of gun control, a popular member of Congress, and a competent governor, Walz seems well-suited to Harris' shotgun campaign. He reportedly told Harris that he didn't have an interest in running for president, which may have endeared him to her campaign over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

The newly energized Democratic ticket has left Republicans and their insult-comic presidential nominee struggling to produce anything more than embarrassing soundbites. Donald Trump posted a bizarre what-if fantasy about Joe Biden crashing back into the presidential race and demanding another debate. (Trump recently pulled out of a planned debate with Harris.) Trump's running mate said that the mild-mannered midwestern governor was "one of the most far-left radicals in the entire United States government." Gonna need take more than that, JD.

With Cori Bush's Loss, Another Progressive Goes Down to Right-Wing Money

Rep. Cori Bush, a member of the Squad from Missouri's 1st Congressional District, lost her primary race to Wesley Bell, the public prosecutor for St. Louis County. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent about $9 million on ads against Bush and in support of her opponent, making it the second most expensive primary race behind the one that unseated Jamaal Bowman less than two months ago. AIPAC also poured millions into that race.

  • Hamas Names Yahya Sinwar Its New Leader Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas in Gaza who helped plan the Oct. 7 attacks, was named yesterday as the group's overall political leader, following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. The killing of Haniyeh – when he was in Iran for the inauguration of the country's new president – has been widely attributed to Israel. via NBC News.
  • DoJ Charges Pakistani Man With Plotting Assassinations The Department of Justice announced the arrest of a Pakistani man who was attempting to plot the assassinations of unnamed high-ranking US officials. The scheme never passed beyond the planning stage, although the criminal indictment implies that he was working on behalf of Iran. via NYT and CNN.
  • Trump Says He'll Chat With Musk, Who Sues Advertisers Donald Trump announced that he'll be doing a "major interview with Elon Musk" on Monday, August 12. Meanwhile, in a bizarrely unsettling video, X CEO Linda Yaccarino announced that her boss was suing advertisers – whom he had told to "fuck off"! – for boycotting the site. via Reuters and AP.
  • FBI Investigating GOP Rep for Campaign Finance Violations The FBI obtained a warrant allowing agents to search the phone of Rep. Andrew Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee. A right-winger with a faked resume, Ogles has been accused by an ethics watchdog group of concealing more than a million dollars in loans and a line of credit. via WaPo and News Channel 5.

That's how many consecutive Olympic gold medals that Mijain Lopez has won in Greco-Roman wrestling. A 41-year-old from Cuba, Lopez handily won his gold medal match yesterday – against his former training partner, who competes for Chile – and immediately announced his retirement. The wrestler nicknamed "El Terrible" is the only Olympian to ever win gold in five consecutive Olympics. With Lopez retiring, the title of greatest living wrestler may belong to Amit Elor, a 20-year-old woman from California who won the gold medal yesterday in Olympic freestyle wrestling. She hasn't lost a match in five years.
