It's Getting Really Hot, Like Way Too Hot
Climate change has gotten so bad that we now have something called "heat wave season," according a Washington Post article that examines the effects of extreme heat on air travel. (In case you wondered, it's not good.) This year's heat wave season is now in full effect. Saturday June 15 was the "hottest June day ever recorded" on Earth. About 63 million people were under heat advisories yesterday. It was 112 degrees in Phoenix, where 645 people died from heat issues last year.
It's about to get a lot worse: "Over the next seven days, 265 million people, or about 82% of the U.S. population, are likely to experience temperatures topping 90 degrees," according to a dismal dispatch from ABC News.
Hardly any portion of the country will be immune from warnings about heat stroke, triple-digit temperatures, and heat domes. You might expect 104 degrees in El Paso, but did you know it's pushing 100 in most of Colorado? On Wednesday, it's supposed to hit 101 degrees on the Maine-Canada border. There will also be high humidity in some parts.
The National Weather Service warned about a surge in heat-related illnesses, especially for people working outside. Overall, heat-related deaths are rising, with 2,302 people in the US dying last year. Stay indoors; drink water; check on the stick and elderly people in your life. And maybe call your Congressman and remind them that the planet is on fire.

Supreme Court Un-Bans Gun Bump Stocks
On Friday, the Supreme Court voted 6 to 3 to eliminate a ban on bump stocks – devices that allow semiautomatic rifles to fire very rapidly. The ban was implemented after the 2017 Las Vegas concert shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in American history. The judges' decisions were mostly predicated on the question of whether a bump stock turns a rifle into an illegal machine gun. The conservative justices, naturally, didn't think so.
The bump stock decision is one of many consequential rulings currently trickling out of the nation's highest court, as Corey discussed last week. There are still twenty-plus decisions to come on a number of important issues, which means we'll have a couple dozen more opportunities to be disappointed. And the next president – as even Biden realizes – will have the power to alter the court's makeup even more.
Last Year, 171,000 People Had Out-of-State Abortions
According to the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive rights organization, in 2023, 171,300 people traveled outside of their home state to receive an abortion. In states where abortion remains legal, the number of procedures increased significantly, reflecting an influx of people from states with broad bans against abortion. The study found that Illinois, New Mexico, and North Carolina (which only allows abortion up to 12 weeks) were among the states receiving more patients.
Traveling for an abortion is an option unavailable to many people, especially the working poor. In a recent policy analysis titled "Clear and Growing Evidence That Dobbs Is Harming Reproductive Health and Freedom," the Guttmacher Institute surveyed a "broad range of impacts," including fewer clinics, more telehealth and self-managed medicated abortions, and risks to contraceptive care. Perhaps most importantly, the organization noted, the number of "clinician-provided abortions" actually went up 11 percent between 2020 and 2023.

- Maryland Governor Will Pardon 175k Weed Convictions Wes Moore, the Democratic governor of Maryland, plans to pardon 175,000 marijuana convictions in the state. It's one of the biggest such mass pardons in the growing movement to legalize marijuana and make amends for past injustices. via WaPo.

That's the size of the mammoth settlement that crypto company Terraform Labs agreed to pay to the SEC. Terraform was the company behind TerraUSD, a so-called "stablecoin" that proved very unstable and helped wipe out more than $40 billion in market value, making a fugitive of Do Kwon, the company's fraudster founder. Kwon was eventually arrested in Montenegro, trying to use a fake passport to flee the country. He faces criminal charges in the US and South Korea.
