THE BIG NEWS
Americans Say No Kings, Chicago Mayor Calls for General Strike
Seven million people showed up to No Kings protests on Saturday, in 2,700 gatherings held in all 50 states and in cities around the world, organizers said. They marched, in some cases for miles, to denounce Trump, his white supremacist confederates, and their policies of death. Two million more protesters showed up than in June, according to organizers, a reflection of the growing rage over Trump’s destruction of the rule of law, his immigrant terror and illegal bombing campaigns, and his enrichment of his billionaire friends, among other evils. Channeling that rage in Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson called for a general strike, HuffPost reported, saying, “We are going to make them pay their fair share in taxes to fund our school, to fund jobs, to fund healthcare, to fund transportation.”
Protests were largely peaceful, even at major gatherings. The New York Police Department, for example, said about 100,000 people went to events across the entire city and that there were no protest-related arrests. Boston’s gathering was even bigger, with an estimated 125,000 people, and likewise had no arrests. But some police departments decided to attack. In Colorado, the Denver Police Department arrested 13 people after telling them to disperse and throwing pepper balls and gas canisters at them, according to the Denver Post and Colorado Public Radio. One protester told CBS News that he and others were walking down the street when officers fired “tear gas and other munitions” unprovoked, stopped the group, and arrested a woman “because she was in the way.” Police in Los Angeles were similarly escalatory, ordering dispersal at 6:55 p.m. and giving people 15 minutes to leave or risk arrest, the LA Times reported. Then just a few minutes after the order, the LAPD “declared the unlawful assembly and began to press a line of protesters outside the facility. Police shot multiple nonlethal rounds, used tear gas and brought in a fleet of horses in an attempt to push back crowds.”
Trump responded to the events by posting an AI-generated video to social media showing him wearing a crown, flying a jet and bombing protesters with poop, which the NYT is too squeamish to say directly. Republicans cast protesters as people who “hate” America. When asked for a comment about No Kings, White House Spokesperson Abigail Jackson said, “Who cares?”
“Right now in Washington, DC, Mike Johnson, Stephen Miller, and Donald Trump are holding what can only be called the real ’Hate America Rally,’” said Logan Keith, a veteran and spokesperson for the 50501 Movement, a No Kings partner. “As they slash funding for students with special needs, unleash armed troops to intimidate and attack our own citizens, and strip healthcare from millions to enrich their billionaire friends – they show us exactly what hating America looks like.”

Israel Continues Genocide
Israel has continued its genocide in Palestine for the last 10 days, despite agreeing to a ceasefire with Hamas. Per Common Dreams, “Attacks include but are not limited to a double-tap drone and missile strike on a café west of Deir al-Balah that killed five people, all of them reportedly civilians; an airstrike on the al-Bureij refugee camp that killed four civilians; an airstrike on the Sardi school that killed four displaced civilians; artillery shelling that killed six civilians on al-Zawaida Beach; and the bombing of a building housing journalists in al-Zawaida that killed two civilians. By Al Jazeera’s count as of Sunday night, Israel had violated the ceasefire agreement 80 times, killing at least 97 Palestinians and injuring 230 more. Reuters reported on Sunday that the Israeli military bombed Gaza and killed at least 26 people, including at least one child. Residents said at least one strike hit a former school where displaced people were sheltering.
US Deports Survivors of Illegal Caribbean Bombing Campaign
At least two people survived after Trump illegally bombed a semi-submersible vessel in the Caribbean Sea late last week and have been sent to their home countries of Colombia and Ecuador “to be detained and prosecuted,” Reuters reported Saturday. The attack was the sixth time Trump has blown up a boat in the region. His unauthorized war has so far killed at least 27 people since it began in September. It was unclear how many people died in the latest attack, and it was the first in which anyone was left alive, according to The Washington Post. Per the Post: “One official familiar with the situation said the outcome was unexpected and had set off a frenzied debate among Pentagon leaders over what to do with the two people who were detained. This person said it appears military officials had no plan for such a contingency.”

Gregory Dreibelbis said “the live-fire exercise will involve M777 howitzer artillery firing over a portion of Interstate 5,” and that the highway didn’t need to be closed because there were safety precautions. Thieves earlier in the month stole two dishes and a vase in Chinese porcelain classed as national treasures from a museum in the central city of Limoges, with the losses estimated at 6.5 million euros. In November last year, four thieves stole snuffboxes and other precious artifacts from the Cognacq-Jay museum in Paris, breaking into a display case with axes and baseball bats.” via Le Monde.
SOME NUMBER
47 percent
That’s the share of American adults who are “not very” or “not at all” confident that they could find a good job if needed, according to a new Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll. The number is up sharply from 2023, when the share of adults with that gloomy outlook was 37 percent. The AP called the findings a “warning sign” for Republicans, which is putting it mildly.

PARTING WORDS
“The very things we need to understand if we have a problem now, and if we will have a problem in the future, are being systematically dismantled.”
-- Joseph Osmundson, a clinical associate professor of biology at New York University, describing how Trump’s evisceration of public health funding is hobbling the ability to research, monitor and contain an especially dangerous type of mpox recently identified in three California residents. The type is called Clade 1 and is responsible for tens of thousands of infections and hundreds of deaths in parts of Africa. The type that had been circulating the US in 2022 is called Clade 2 and causes a less severe illness. All three people required hospitalization and are now recovering in isolation at home, the NYT reported. Doctors said they’re concerned about wider infection and noted that mpox can be deadly for those with untreated HIV.
