But His Emails! Trump Campaign Hacked
Donald Trump's campaign was hacked, according to Donald Trump's campaign. Last month, an unknown party began emailing Trump campaign documents to Politico, which later the confirmed their authenticity with Team Trump. The documents included a 271-page dossier on JD Vance from the time he was being vetted for the VP slot.
Trump spokesman Steven Cheung attributed the hack to "foreign sources hostile to the United States" bent on election interference. He added: "On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a 'high ranking official' on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024."
“We were just informed by Microsoft Corporation that one of our many websites was hacked by the Iranian Government – Never a nice thing to do!” Trump posted on Truth Social. He claimed it was only publicly available information.
The source refused to tell Politico how they obtained the documents, which seem to have been passed along in drips and drabs. Politico has published very little information from the documents or really given a sense of how large a cache it may have received. The New York Times said that it received a similar batch of documents from someone claiming to be the same source. The Times also didn't describe much of their contents, except that the Vance vetting document contained critical comments he had made about Trump in the past – aka stuff we already know.
The hack immediately recalls the 2016 hack-and-leak of emails from Hillary Clinton and her advisors and has caused Politico and other news organizations to be very circumspect about reporting this one out. Reporters have publicly expressed fears – already – that they will repeat the mistakes of 2016, when they breathlessly reported on every revelation from a Russia-affiliated hacker without examining larger contextual questions: Who did this? Do these emails matter? How does one report on hacked materials without incidentally advancing the goals of the hackers?
For now, reporters seemed to have self-imposed an embargo on the materials. "We all need to be very vigilant," said more than one commentator on CNN.

Ukraine Has Officially Invaded Russia
Last week Ukrainian forces launched an unusual cross-border offensive into Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022. As Corey wrote on Friday, the incursion came as a shock to many war observers – and apparently to the Russian government – while Ukrainian officials refused to acknowledge that they were launching a counter-invasion of their enemy. That changed on Saturday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that his solders were operating inside Russia. "Ukraine is proving that it really knows how to restore justice and guarantees exactly the kind of pressure that is needed – pressure on the aggressor," said Zelensky. The bold attack could leave Ukraine vulnerable on other fronts, but it has humiliated Russia's military and left it scrambling to respond.
Another Massacre: Israeli Air Strike Kills 100 People Sheltering in a School
Another horrific Israeli airstrike killed 100 people who were sheltering in a school in Gaza City, according to a number of reports. Israel claimed that it had killed 19 militants and released a list of their names. Palestinian activists and friends of the deceased said that the airstrike target was a group of refugees praying at the school and that the Israeli list of supposed militants included a young child, three people who were killed last December, and a number of others who had nothing to do with Hamas (or politics at all).
On Sunday, Israel, which is expecting an impending retaliatory attack from Iran for assassinating Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, issued more mass evacuation orders in southern Gaza. Nearly all of Gaza's residents have been displaced, most of them many times over, as the designated "safe zones" aren't safe from indiscriminate bombing.

- Scores of Homeless Seniors Are Dying on LA's Streets A new investigation has found that more than 3,000 people 60 and older died homeless on the streets of Los Angeles during the last decade. The figures reflect the toll that the housing crisis has taken on people of all ages, including those receiving social security benefits. via The Guardian.
