THE BIG NEWS

Doddering Biden Debate Performance Has the DNC Class Worried

Last President Joe Biden maundered his way through an uninspiring debate performance against a typically unhinged Donald Trump that even left the lanyard-wearers concerned. On CNN and MSNBC, panelists reported on anonymous Democratic insiders calling it a "disaster" and a "trainwreck." Vice President Kamala Harris, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and other top Democrats dutifully did mop-up duty, promising that Biden was ready for another term and that it was just one bad performance – like a point guard having a bad shooting night. "It was a slow start. That's obvious to everyone," said Vice President Harris.

For those who watched – and many voters won't or will only ingest the evening's dismal proceedings in meme form – it was simply a depressing spectacle. Trump issued constant lies that the moderators failed to push back on. He had to be asked three times whether he would accept the results of the 2024 election. He demonized migrants with the kind of fascist rhetoric that has become a staple of his rallies. He was narcissistic, preening, volatile – an aspiring petty dictator. He was Trump.

In response, the Democrats offered a candidate whose infirmity is now undeniable to his biggest supporters.

"Telling people they didn't see what they saw is not the way to respond to this," said Ben Rhodes, a top national security staffer in the Obama administration.

Whether that panic – and the call to do something – will survive this week is unclear. But last night, Democratic insiders saw what the rest of us saw and what the left has long been warning about.

PARTING WORDS

"His candidacy was initially treated as a joke, in part because Mr. Friedman seemed to treat it that way himself. He campaigned on a series of one-liners: “How hard could it be?,” “He ain’t Kinky, he’s my governor,” “I’ll sign anything but bad legislation.” “If you elect me the first Jewish governor of the state of Texas,” he declared, “I’ll reduce the speed limit to 54.95.'"
