THE BIG NEWS

Biden Administration Knew Israel Was Bombing Targets Based on Shaky Intel

At least as far back as Oct. 27, the Biden administration knew that Israel was bombing targets that had not been properly vetted, even by the IDF's relative standards. In public, the administration offered nothing but full-throated support for the Israeli government while rushing shipments of military aid. But as the Washington Post notes in a new report, "discrepancies were emerging far earlier than publicly known between the Biden team’s internal doubts about Israel’s conduct and its ironclad external support."

Concern over Israeli targeting practices certainly predates this war, but it's become a major issue as Israel conducts seemingly indiscriminate and high volume bombing campaigns. In a thorough investigation, the leftist Israeli news site +972 reported that the IDF was using artificial intelligence to generate practically endless lists of targets in what was deemed an "assassination factory."

The WaPo report suggests that the Biden administration, rather than cutting off the flow of weapons or diplomatic support, decided to support Israel no matter what, even if it meant spreading wrong information or covering for war crimes. That included Israel's targeting of Gaza's al Shifa hospital. As Sen. Chris Van Hollen, a gentle critic of Israel and the Biden administration, put it, "I did find there to be some disconnect between the administration’s public statements and the classified findings." That's called lying.

Another Beautiful Day of Electoral Democracy

Joe Biden and Donald Trump are well past the thresholds needed to secure their respective party nominations, so we're now firmly in the down-ballot phase of primary watching. On Tuesday, Bernie Moreno, a used car magnate known for his dislike of LGBTQ people and for apparently seeking gay sex on a hookup site, won the nomination to be the Republican candidate for Senate in Ohio. He'll face progressive stalwart Sherrod Brown in November. Moreno was endorsed by Trump, who at a recent rally, rather than talking about Moreno's bona fides, gave his instantly infamous "bloodbath" rant. Moreno called Trump's support "a badge of honor." If it weren't already clear, the Republican Party – and, crucially, the RNC fundraising apparatus – belongs to Trump.

Supreme Court Gives Thumbs Up to Texas Immigration Law

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, denied a request by the Biden administration to block a new Texas law empowering police to conduct immigration enforcement duties. The case concerning the law will be considered by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which the administration had claimed infringed on the federal government's authority to manage immigration and police the border. As the New York Times notes, the law would grant more power to the Texas state government to further militarize the border and to arrest suspected violators far from the border itself. It could also serve as an example to other Republican states – including some that are nowhere near the northern or southern borders.

PARTING WORDS

"It’s a little bit of an unfortunate situation there, but from Israel’s perspective I would do my best to move the people out and then clean it up."

-- Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and political adviser, speaking about Israel's war in Gaza. Kushner noted that "Gaza's waterfront property could be very valuable." In a discussion about whether the Israeli government would allow Gazans to return to their homes, Kushner said, "I am not sure there is much left of Gaza at this point." He was not speaking out of sympathy.
