Netanyahu Won't Stop in Gaza, Threatens Lebanon – and Biden's Political Support

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly said that he intends to continue fighting until Hamas is destroyed – however nebulous and unlikely that goal might be. Over the weekend, Netanyahu claimed that the fighting was lessening in Gaza and that soon Israeli forces will be rotated to the northern border with Lebanon, in preparation for a possible war with Lebanese Hezbollah. That could prove even more disastrous than Gaza; Hezbollah is far better armed and more capable than Hamas.

But despite Netanyahu's comments about reduced fighting, there's little sign that Israel is letting up in Gaza or that he might be interested in peace talks. "I am not willing to end the war and leave Hamas as it is," he said, according to Reuters.

Netanyahu did say that he was amenable to a "partial" ceasefire deal, Al Jazeera reported, but wouldn't abide by any agreement that required Israel to stop its military campaign in Gaza. This kind of Schrodinger's diplomacy has mostly seemed like a way for Netanyahu to do the bare minimum expected by his allies on ceasefire negotiations while continuing to mercilessly pummel Gaza. Over the weekend, Israeli forces bombed targets throughout Gaza, including Rafah, killing dozens of people.

Netanyahu has also found time to alienate his most stalwart supporter, accusing the Biden administration of withholding weapons his military needs. Netanyahu made the accusations twice, first in an English-language video published online and then in a cabinet meeting yesterday. The Biden administration called the suggestions ridiculous and touted its pretty much uninhibited support for Israel at a time when much of the world thinks it's committing horrific daily atrocities. CBS News quoted the flacks' pushback:

"There's no other country that's done more, or will continue to do more than the United States to help Israel defend itself," John Kirby said. 
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "We genuinely do not know what he's talking about."

The Biden administration responded to Netanyahu's initial whiny video by canceling a meeting and "scolding" the impudent leader of our client state. In the snobbish world of diplomatic norms, that means something. But for Palestinians still dying from US bombs, it means nothing at all.

It's Still Way Too Hot, Man

Heat wave, heat dome, extreme heat season – whatever you call it, it's very toasty and unbearable out there. There are wildfires in California and New Mexico and devastating flooding in Iowa and South Dakota. Some two hundred million Americans experienced temps of at least 90 degrees over the weekend. The national heat index map is soaked in red. From concerns about water consumption to the health of homeless people, the global heat crisis has proved to be about much more than keeping people cool. The New York Times has put together a live page for coverage of a heat wave that's officially entering Day 8, and many papers are doing the same. This is the new normal.

In Mecca, where the temperature has hit 115 degrees or higher during the Hajj pilgrimage, more than 1,300 people have died. In India, 120-plus degree conditions threaten the country's agriculture. The United Nations says that there's a "truly astonishing consensus" among the global population for real action on climate change. Does the UN understand that? It's hosting this year's UN climate conference in Azerbaijan, a gas-rich mafia state.

Photojournalist Injured By Police in 2020 BLM Protests Is Dying

Linda Tirado, a fierce and courageous photojournalist who lost an eye after being shot in the face by police while covering the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis, has entered hospice care. In May 2020, Tirado was chronicling the protests when a police officer fired a "less lethal" munition that hit Tirado in the goggles she was wearing. Despite the protective gear, she lost an eye. She later received a settlement from the city and was a pugnacious voice against police violence. It turned out that Tirado, who is only 42, also suffered a severe brain injury that led to dementia. She recently announced that she was dying. "No funeral. No burial," she posted on X when asked about being memorialized. "What you want to do is blast you some early 80s punk and raise a glass."

Michael Flynn, a QAnon-worshipping, psychopath-for-hire who was gently eased out of the Trump admin, has reaped at least $2.2 million for himself and various family members through a small nonprofit organization for which he does two hours of work a week. Beats government work! via NYT.
  • Prosecutors Want to Criminally Charge Boeing Justice Department prosecutors have recommended to their bosses that they bring criminal charges against Boeing, the wildly reckless aircraft maker responsible for two deadly crashes and a spate of troubling mechanical incidents and whistleblower reports. Given Boeing's prominence as a US defense contractor, it's possible that the company will simply pay a fine and subject itself to more federal oversight. via Reuters.
