DNC Day 2: Barack and Michelle Stump For Kamala

The Democratic Party wrapped up the second day of its celebratory national convention with triumphant speeches from Barack and Michelle Obama, urging Americans to vote for Kamala Harris this fall. There were also star turns by potential first gentleman Douglas Emhoff – America's new goofy entertainment lawyer step-dad – and Harris herself, appearing by video from a packed arena in Milwaukee, the same arena that the RNC struggled to fill.

The Democrats continue to wrap themselves in patriotism and the flag. And the rapper Lil Jon. Bernie Sanders called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and – practically with a wink – an end to billionaires buying party primaries.

Former president Barack Obama was in mid-season form, giving one of his most energizing speeches in years. As with other speakers, he went after Trump as a weird bully who wants to interfere in your private life. He also suggested that Trump has a small dick and that the country can't afford another round of Trumpism.

"We have seen that movie before," said Obama. "And we all know that the sequel is usually worse."

Blinken Heads Back Home After Ceasefire Talks Fail Yet Again

Despite the efforts of US, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators, Israel and Hamas appear no closer to a ceasefire. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has visited the region nine times since Oct. 7, and every visit has ended in frustration and failure. Before leaving Tel Aviv, Blinken claimed that Israel had accepted a "bridging proposal" while "Hamas is now backing away." Hamas officials said those remarks were inaccurate and accused President Joe Biden of showing "blind bias" toward Israel – which, hey, fair. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly expressed his intention to continue the war no matter what while his own ministers have accused him of sabotaging ceasefire talks.

US Birth Rate Reaches Record Low

The country's birth rate reached a record low in 2023, falling three percent from the prior year. Fewer than 3.6 million babies were born in the US last year. The data reflect an overall decline that has been ongoing for decades (with some interruptions, such as a Covid-era baby boomlet). People are getting married later and facing economic uncertainties that contribute to fewer births. But the trend also reflects the imperiled state of reproductive rights and less access to healthcare. According to CDC data, the number of pregnant women receiving prenatal care has also declined.

  • Zelensky Says The West's Red Lines About Russia Are "Naive" With Ukraine experiencing some on-the-ground success since invading Russia more than two weeks ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that US concerns about his forces attacking inside Russia have been overblown. "It is the time when the world is shedding its last and very naïve illusions about Russia," said Zelensky. via NYT.
  • Creepy Congressman Matt Gaetz Wins His Primary Rep. Matt Gaetz, the fratty Florida Republican, won his primary race against a candidate supported by former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. Gaetz, who is the subject of an ongoing ethics investigation, helped oust McCarthy from his job, and the two men clearly hate one another. via Axios and AP.

That was the closing price yesterday of Trump Media & Technology Group – an all-time low for the former president's farcical social-media company. The stock soared earlier this year, despite the fact that the company loses millions, makes less than $900k annually in revenue, and is the personal enrichment vehicle of one of the worst people alive. But TM&TG has been a popular MAGA meme stock and a way for wealthy right-wingers to attempt to purchase influence in a future administration. It still has a ways to fall.
