Another Crackpot Tried to Shoot Trump
On Sunday around 1:30pm ET, a man identified by law enforcement as Ryan Routh allegedly tried to shoot former president Donald Trump while he was golfing in Florida. Routh, who is 58, was reportedly standing outside the grounds of the course, armed with a scoped AK-47 or SKS-type rifle, when a Secret Service agent spotted Routh and fired at him, causing him to flee. Routh was later arrested.
Details are still emerging – and you can only imagine the social-media hysteria being generated by another assassination attempt on Trump – but based on early reporting, Routh comes across as a crazed glory-seeker with incoherent politics, though he had been a Trump supporter at some point. He is also an ardent Ukraine booster who wrote on X that he wanted to raise a group of foreign soldiers to go fight against Russia. (By Sunday night, X had removed Routh's account.)
Routh has a lengthy criminal history in North Carolina: a hit and run, misdemeanor gun charges, possession of stolen goods, numerous motor vehicle violations. In 2002, during an attempted traffic stop, an armed Routh drove to a nearby roofing company and barricaded himself inside the building. He was later charged with "possession of a weapon of mass destruction" – that is, a fully automatic machine gun. The charge clearly didn't stop him from obtaining another weapon of war to aim at Trump 22 years later.

Defiant Vance Admits He Lied About Haitian Migrants
For about a week, Donald Trump and JD Vance – along with Elon Musk and leading MAGA personalities – have promoted lies about Haitian migrants in Ohio, demonizing them as destructive, uncultured brutes who are crashing cars, driving up the cost of living, and eating people's pets. On Sunday, during a CNN interview, Vance admitted what we all knew: that he's full of shit.
"If I have to create stories so that the American media actually has to pay attention to the suffering of American people, then that’s what I’m going to do," Vance told Dana Bash.
His interview performance only got worse, with Vance admitting he hasn't visited Springfield, Ohio; denying that his comments are to blame for the bomb threats and other harassment these (legal) Haitian immigrants are now facing; and finally telling Bash to "shut up."
Local officials from Springfield have asked Vance to stop pumping out poisonous rhetoric that's putting people in danger. Vance seems undeterred, claiming that his comments can't be blamed for inciting the bomb threats.
Loony Racist Laura Loomer Looks Very Comfortable With Trump
Laura Loomer, a flamboyantly insane right-wing influencer who courts white supremacists and the most racist elements of the MAGA movement, has been hanging out with Donald Trump a lot lately. She accompanied him on his plane to the recent presidential debate. She's also been posting 9/11 conspiracy theories, which is, to be fair, far less offensive than most of what she shares, writes, and does.
Loomer has been bouncing around the MAGA grift-o-sphere for years, racking up offensive quotes and a degree of infamy, but little else. She once chained herself to Twitter HQ to protest.. something. Now, Loomer has somehow pushed her way into Trump's inner circle, and apparently she's too beyond the pale for some MAGA luminaries like Marjorie Taylor Greene. Even JD Vance criticized Loomer in very mild terms after she made racist comments about Indians (Vance's wife Usha is the daughter of Indian immigrants).
Loomer is no less horrific than many people who advise Trump and dine with him at Mar-a-Lago. But the real question that everyone wants to ask is: are Trump and Loomer.. you know? At least one media blowhard isn't afraid to suggest it!

The fake stories were part of a strong rightward swerve by the 180-year-old newspaper under editor Jake Wallis Simons, who has vigorously defended Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza. via The Guardian.
- Universities Are Changing Campus Rules to Stop Gaza Protesters Dozens of universities instituted new rules over the summer to limit public gatherings, encampments, and political protests. Schools have increased penalties for infractions, making it easier to expel students, and university police forces have been hiring more officers and arming themselves with potent weaponry. via Mother Jones.
