THE BIG NEWS
Black Friday Means Big Discounts and Labor Strife
Black Friday is no longer the violent stampede of desperate consumers it once was, but along with Cyber Monday, it's still a major shopping day – and a major headache for overworked, underpaid retail employees, delivery drivers, and factory workers. Labor is fighting back. Thousands of Amazon workers went on strike in several European countries, an action they plan to continue through today. In Seattle, Macy's workers went on strike for better wages and more help dealing with shoplifters. At the same time, unions in Sweden have rallied around Tesla workers, both supporting their strike and refusing to do any business with the company. The immediate result is that mechanics won't work on Tesla cars and Swedish postal workers won't deliver Tesla license plates in the mail – meaning that the cars can't be driven on public roads. "This is insane," Elon Musk posted on X.

Hamas and Israel Exchange Prisoners, Eye Long-Term Ceasefire
Hamas has released three groups of prisoners, returning dozens of people to Israel who the militant group kidnapped from their homes near the Gaza border on October 7. Israel, in turn, has released about 78 imprisoned Palestinian women and children, some of whom had never been charged with crimes. Hamas has also released a number of Thai migrant workers who were seized on Oct. 7. The exchanges were facilitated by the Red Cross and have spawned hopes of a longer-term truce.
Despite the ceasefire in Gaza, Israel continues conducting military operations in the West Bank. A merchant near Ramallah spoke to NPR about the ongoing conflict:
"It's good that we have a truce in Gaza, but there is no truce in the West Bank. They still raid our villages, they still raid our refugee camps ... make arrests and attack people."
Palestinian-American College Students Shot in Vermont
Three friends, all 20 years old and of Palestinian descent, were shot by a man in Burlington, Vermont. The young men were speaking Arabic and two were wearing keffiyehs, leading authorities to believe they were deliberately targeted based on their identity. The three victims are hospitalized, one of them with serious injuries, and the attack is being investigated as a hate crime. The shooter, a 48-year-old man named Jason J. Eaton, was arrested yesterday afternoon.

That's how many days of school were canceled due to the Portland Teachers' Union strike, the first in the city's history. After a provisional deal was reached yesterday, Portland's students are expected to return to class today. The union didn't get everything it wanted, and the rank-and-file still have to vote to ratify the contract, but they did make progress on higher wages, soft caps on class sizes, and more planning time for instruction.

PARTING WORDS
"I’ve been able to make my dream projects already. But my favorite film of all time is Jurassic Park, so I would love to get in on the dinosaurs. Well, first and foremost, it’s very erotic. I think humans and dinosaurs have gotten to that stage in their time together where things are starting to get quite thrilling. So, there’s a marriage between a man and a velociraptor and it’s basically a domestic drama."
-- Emerald Fennell, a rising writer-actor-director, talking to Deadline about her vision of a very sexy inter-species dinosaur romance.
