Start your week with this powerful essay by Hamilton Nolan about Friday’s May Day protests. “In some beautiful future, every worker will get May Day off. One day. But not yet. For now, it can also serve as a day when you remember the workers who are still working, and think about how you could make their lives better.” -Whitney

18th Immigrant Dead in ICE Concentration Camp – The Monday AM Quickie 5/4/26
At least 18 people have died in Trump’s immigrant concentration camps this year, according to a government press release on Friday. Cuban national Denny Adán González, 33, died in Georgia’s Stewart Detention Center; he is suspected of killing himself. The private prison contractor CoreCivic runs Steward Detention Center, a company whose profits leapt 69 percent last year to $116.5 million, thanks to Trump sending them our tax money.
According to The Guardian, “González is the fourth person to die by suicide inside the Stewart detention center. In 2017 a young Panamanian immigrant died inside a solitary confinement cell, and in 2018 a Mexican man also died by suicide inside a solitary unit. Last summer, another 45-year-old man from Mexico died by suicide in Stewart.” In addition, 68-year-old Abelardo Avellaneda-Delgado died in Stewart last May, according to the government. He was found unresponsive and the government listed no cause of death.
Andrew Free was the first to report González’s death in his newsletter, #DetentionKills, and says González had been put in solitary confinement after an “altercation with a CoreCivic guard that left the guard unconscious.” He put the total number of deaths at Stewart at 15. Free ends his piece with a plea: “We can do better than this. El Refugio offers support to people locked inside Stewart and their loved ones. They could use your help.”

Billionaires Made $2,500 Per Second Last Year While Worker Pay Fell
Ultra-wealthy people everywhere made giant piles of money in 2025 while the rest of us did not, according to a new Oxfam study covered in The Guardian. Oxfam found that real wages have fallen 12% since 2019. Meanwhile, billionaires added to their wealth at a rate of $2,500 per second last year. Total pay for chief executive officers around the world “increased 20 times faster” than pay for workers; average CEOs got paid $8.4 million last year compared to $7.6 million the year before. At least four CEOs of major corporations each took home more than $100 million in pay and bonuses, with some of the biggest payouts going to luxury brand LVMH owner Bernard Arnault and Zara owner Amancio Ortega, who respectively took home $3.8 billion and $3.7 billion. Not only are these richies hoarding money and resources, they’re also using their immense power to oppress the workers who make all of their wealth possible. Per Oxfam:
Corporations and their CEOs often use their influence to consolidate power and ownership in ways that can undermine democracy and workers' rights.
Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle, has used his wealth to become a major stakeholder in Paramount, which was purchased by his son’s company and includes major broadcast network CBS.
In France, far-right billionaire Vincent Bolloré now controls CNews, and has rebranded it as the French equivalent of Fox News.
In 2024, Oxfam filed a formal UN complaint against Amazon and Walmart’s systematic human rights violations. Amazon and Walmart’s outsized wealth and power in the economy have enabled them to clamp down on unionization efforts and collective organizing.
Trump Plans to Cut Troops 'Way Down' Across Europe
First Trump said he would withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the US was “being humiliated by the Iranian leadership.” This weekend, he expanded the punishment to Europe in general, not just Germany, where the US has the most troops, about 40,000, the BBC, the Guardian and NBC News reported. “We’re going to cut way down, and we’re cutting a lot further than 5,000,” he said. Now some Republicans are upset, or at least, they’re pretending to be. “We are very concerned by the decision to withdraw a U.S. brigade from Germany,” the heads of the Senate and House Armed Services committees, Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Rep. Mike Rogers, wrote in a joint statement. They’re allegedly worried that it’s a bad look to betray a NATO ally and make things easier for Russia. OK? Sorry? I don’t know what to tell you ol’ boys. Get your dog on a leash.

That’s how much evil AI military contractor and surveillance villain Palantir is charging for its latest fake invention: a “chore coat.” The working-class cosplay merch resembles the French bleu de travail – work blue – created in the 19th century for workers to wear, which some say is the origin for the term “blue-collar jobs.” The coat has Palantir’s logo on the front, so the pitch is for us to pay for the privilege of giving them free advertising amid an affordability crisis that is making it impossible for Americans to pay for food and health insurance.
