THE BIG NEWS

The US Is Outsourcing Its Migrant Crackdown to Mexico

President Joe Biden has embraced draconian, Trump-like border policies, including his recent order potentially shutting down asylum requests. But the effort to stem the flow of migrants starts far south of the border and increasingly involves Mexican law enforcement and security forces detaining, abusing, and removing migrants. According to a new Associated Press investigation, "Mexican authorities are employing a simple but harsh tactic: wearing migrants out until they give up."

In practice, that means arresting migrants throughout the country – in cities and villages, traveling on buses, even walking by the side of the road – and shipping them south. Many are dumped in the southern towns of Villahermosa and Tapachula. The program apparently has worked, reducing encounters at the US-Mexico border by as much as 40 percent.

The violent crackdown may have slowed some migrants, but it hasn't stopped them. After being dumped in southern Mexico – often after being abused or robbed – many migrants simply start the trek again or look for work so that they might afford another attempt at the journey north.

“I would rather cross the Darien Gap 10,000 times than cross Mexico,” one young woman told the AP.

It's not just Mexico where the United States has looked to allies to do its dirty work in discouraging migration. In recent months, the Darien Gap, a dangerous passage between Panama and Colombia that has become a central conduit for migrants, received so much attention that a wave of right-wing influencers went down there to propagandize against migrants, casting them as dangerous invaders. Panama's newly elected president said that he would close the Darien Gap, through which half a million people traveled last year. The US relationship with El Salvador's self-styled dictator Nayib Bukele has also warmed over cooperation on migration. If the Biden administration is determined to choke off the asylum system, it will need the continued help of Latin America's leaders.

Hunter Biden Found Guilty on Gun Charges

After less than two days of jury deliberation, Hunter Biden, son of Joe, was found guilty on three federal gun charges. Prosecutors contended that Biden violated federal law when he signed a mandatory form saying that he was not a drug addict or on drugs. Although prosecutors couldn't definitely show that Biden consumed crack during the 11-day period when he owned the gun, they provided ample evidence and testimony of Biden's prolific use of the drug. Biden is eligible for up to a decade in prison, but it's possible he could see no time at all. He has vowed to appeal.

President Joe Biden reiterated his support for his son. "Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today," he said in a statement. The two were filmed hugging after the sentencing. President Biden has said that he won't pardon his son.

That's how many physicists Russian authorities have arrested since 2015, according to BBC News. All of the scientists worked on hypersonic missile technology, in which Russia is believed to be the world leader. A number of the men were elderly, some died, and some remain imprisoned or missing. The story has been largely suppressed in Russia. Defenders of the imprisoned men say their international collaborations with other researchers are being used as evidence of non-existent espionage. They also speculate that the FSB is making arrests so that senior officials believe that their subordinates are serious about cracking down on spying.

PARTING WORDS

"It definitely feels for me that we’re kind of stuck in the same system that we’ve been stuck in for past 12 years. For me, I feel like it’s definitely going to get better and be able to break free of that system and just be able to become my own person rather than, again, the Sandy Hook kid."

In interviews with the AP, the students spoke of living with the trauma of surviving the worst school shooting in US history, how Sandy Hook later became a protective "bubble" for them, and their hopes for the future.
