THE BIG NEWS

RFK Jr. Is Even More Messed Up Than You Thought

I figure we all deserve a little break from some of the week's most dire news. The estimable Joe Hagan of Vanity Fair has published a long profile of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and it is well worth reading. Not only for the salacious anecdotes from the dynastic scion's obscenely privileged life, but because it clearly illustrates why the people who know him best are so staunchly opposed to his candidacy. Nobody expects him to win, but many other Kennedys fear Bobby's latest ego trip could help put Donald Trump back in the White House.

  • Last year, RFK Jr. texted a photo to a friend in which he held and pretended to eat the barbecued remains of a dog, apparently while on a trip to Korea in 2010, the same year he was diagnosed with a dead tapeworm in his brain. The person who received the photo considered it "disturbing evidence of Kennedy's poor judgment and thoughtlessness, simultaneously mocking Korean culture, reveling in animal cruelty, and needlessly risking his reputation and that of his family."
  • He also has a habit of texting pictures of nude women to friends. "Those friends assumed Kennedy himself had taken the pictures, but they didn't know whether the subjects had consented to having their genitalia photographed, let alone shared with other people."
  • RFK Jr. repeatedly groped a family babysitter, Eliza Cooney, in 1998 when Cooney was 23 and he was 45. She also once found him in her bedroom with her diary laying open on her bed. "I'm not a church boy," Kennedy said yesterday when asked about the allegation. "I am who I am."
  • Family members believe his "protracted 'brain fog'" may owe more to his 14 years as a heroin user, beginning when he was 15 years old. He regularly shot up with his "troubled" brother David, who died of an overdose at age 28 in 1984.
  • The family of Kennedy's former wife Mary Richardson – who died by suicide in 2012, two years Kennedy left her for the actor Cheryl Hines – "has never forgiven Kennedy, privately maintaining that his boorish and insensitive behavior was a factor in Mary's death, hiring a investigative firm to explore a possible wrongful death suit against him, and accusing Kennedy of psychological torture."
  • He was effectively fired from the environmental nonprofit where he long worked due to his increasingly outrageous anti-vax activism and his courtship of Donald Trump around the issue in 2016 and 2017. "'On Monday morning he's giving a speech saying, 'Do not believe any scientists [on vaccines],'" recalls a person with close ties to Riverkeeper. "And on Tuesday, 'You've gotta believe the scientists when it comes to climate change or what we’re doing to the river.'"
  • RFK Jr.'s anti-vax advocacy in American Samoa in 2018 and 2019 led prime minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi to halt MMR vaccines on the island. The consequences were fast and deadly:
"Over the ensuing months, the island was hit by the largest measles outbreak in its history, infecting 5,707 citizens and killing 83 people, most of them children. The outbreak was so lethal, the prime minister declared a state of emergency and ordered mandatory vaccinations, eventually curtailing the spread. Later one of Kennedy's biggest critics, a pediatrician and member of the FDA's advisory committee on vaccines, Paul Offit, told PBS that 'Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had everything to do with that. And that shows you how disinformation can kill.'"

He also defended a cousin who may well have murdered a 15-year-old girl and kept an owl in his house for a while. Read it all here.

  • New York Judge Delays Trump's Sentencing in Hush Money Case Until Sept. 18 at the Earliest "The crux of the issue for [Judge Juan] Merchan will come down to whether some of the evidence, like former Trump aide Hope Hicks' testimony describing a conservation she had with Trump while he was president, is off-limits [thanks to this week's Supreme Court presidential immunity ruling]. • Justice Department Will Forge Ahead with Trump Prosecutions Even if He Wins the Election The department has a longstanding rule against charging sitting presidents, but anonymous current officials say that "if Trump wins the election, the clock on the two federal cases against him would keep ticking until Jan. 20, when he would be sworn in." via the Washington Post and the New York Times.
  • Deranged Felon Dreams About Getting Back Into 'Showbiz' at NBC Author Ramin Setoodeh says he found no evidence for Trump's claim that he was being wooed to return to TV; Trump told him that the appeal of TV stardom is that "You can be evil. You can be horrible." via HuffPost.

That's how many Los Angelenos are still living in hotel rooms three years after the LAPD blew up part of a South LA neighborhood after botching the detonation of a truckload of confiscated fireworks. As the LA Times reports, the city council yesterday unanimously approved $21 million in settlements with more than a dozen people harmed by the blast, which Councilman Curren Price says "should never have happened" and "was entirely preventable."
