Police Spent 100 Minutes Searching for the Trump Gunman

Local police were searching for the Trump gunman for as long as 100 minutes before former President Donald Trump began his speech in Butler, PA. According to the New York Times, "a local countersniper" saw Thomas Crooks sitting at a picnic table before the event. The sniper texted his colleagues that Crooks was aware of their location. In a group chat, officers shared photos of Crooks. One wrote, "I did see him with a range finder looking towards stage."

They notified the Secret Service, but astonishingly, the event proceeded, despite the Secret Service knowing that a suspicious person was using a range finder to measure the distance to the stage where Trump was about to speak.

One police officer was following Crooks but lost sight of him. About six minutes into Trump's speech, people at the rally told police that they saw someone on the warehouse roof. A police officer began to climb onto the roof, but Crooks pointed his gun at him and the cop dropped down. Two minutes later, Crooks started shooting.

Media outlets previously reported that officers first noticed Crooks acting strangely about 60 minutes before the shooting. It turns out that it was almost 40 minutes longer than that, and a number of officers participated in the search. What's more is that Crooks personally scouted out the site before the Secret Service got there. He used a drone; the Secret Service didn't have one. He had two makeshift explosive devices in his car and a detonator on him, which he planned to set off to provide a diversion for an escape. While authorities still puzzle over his motives, every revelation makes the security failure seem more catastrophic.

Trump Promises to Give Bitcoiners Everything They Want

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump spoke to the crypto faithful at the country's largest Bitcoin conference, held this year in Nashville. In a typical rambling speech, Trump offered to give Bitcoiners everything they wanted, including firing SEC chair Gary Gensler, passing favorable regulation, getting the Justice Department off the industry's back, and even creating a national Bitcoin "stockpile." That's right: the Republican Party wants use public money to buy Bitcoin to pump the price of Bitcoin for some of the most insufferable people in the country. The proposal has been echoed by other luminaries like Sen. Cynthia Lummis and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

It was an astonishing performance for how explicitly transactional it was. Trump offered the crowd a wish list of preferred policies – none of which benefit the wider public – in exchange for more donations. They seemed ready to oblige. (Trump's campaign accepts donations in several cryptocurrencies.)

So far, the cryptocurrency industry – despite being rife with fraud, mostly unprofitable, and lacking a real use case – has been the biggest industry donor this political cycle. They've raised more than $200 million – more than MAGA PAC – and are devoting it almost exclusively to supporting pro-crypto candidates and opposing Democrats skeptical of crypto. That also means supporting Donald Trump, whose name was chanted by the audience in Nashville. The former president once said Bitcoin was a "scam," but he's come around.

On Saturday, a rocket struck a football pitch in a Druze village in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, killing twelve children. Israel blamed Hezbollah, which denied the attack. Thousands of people turned out for the funeral while community leaders refused to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On Sunday, Israel bombed targets in southern Lebanon. According to Axios, the Biden administration, fearing further escalation, warned the Israeli government not to strike Beirut. For months, Israel has threatened a major offensive against Hezbollah, which could lead to the Lebanese militant group launching thousands of powerful rockets into Israel.
