‘Humiliated’ Biden Turns to Family for Reassurance

President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is still struggling to find its footing after his troubling debate performance last Thursday night. Even after delivering a “rousing” speech at a North Carolina rally on Friday, NBC News reports that Biden was “humiliated, devoid of confidence and painfully aware that the physical images of him at the debate — eyes staring into the distance, mouth agape — will live beyond his presidency.” His private self-assessment was thus: “I don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel that great.” With Democratic donors in panic mode and media allies including MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and New Yorker editor David Remnick urging Biden to drop out of the race, the wounded incumbent huddled with his most trusted advisers — his close family members — at Camp David over the weekend to discuss what to do. Some Democrats are feeling “gaslit” by the campaign’s response thus far.

Biden’s wife Jill and son Hunter are urging him to brush off concerns about his competency and keep fighting. Per Politico, family members are blaming top Biden advisers and aides for his poor debate performance and calling for heads to roll:

“The blame was cast widely on staffers, including: Anita Dunn, the senior adviser who frequently has the president’s ear; her husband, Bob Bauer, the president’s attorney who played Trump in rehearsals at Camp David; and Ron Klain, the former chief of staff who ran point on the debate prep and previous cycles’ sessions.”

The campaign will hold a call with its national finance committee today “to calm nerves and take temperatures,” the New York Times reports. As of last night, no prominent elected Democrat had taken up the call for Biden to step aside and let a younger candidate lead the presidential ticket, although “serious and rigorous conversations” about it are taking place in Congress and other party power centers. Per the Associated Press, Biden would “likely” need to decide to drop out in order for a new nominee to be chosen at this stage in the delegate process.

The best-positioned potential replacement candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, is choosing her words very carefully. Politico reports that she made clear to her staff after the debate “that they shouldn’t try to sugarcoat how badly her running mate had performed,” and that her task would be to “project confidence as quickly and clearly as possible as a leader of the party, while preserving credibility by recognizing how weak the debate had been.” Sounds like someone is preparing for any eventuality!

  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom Applauds as Court Says Oregon Town Can Outlaw Homelessness “Sleep is a biological necessity, not a crime,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in her dissent. via the Times.
  • Justices Throw Out Obstruction Charges for Jan. 6 Insurrectionists “Special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the case against Trump, has said that even if the Supreme Court ruled the charge was improper for the rioters, it should still stand for the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, who is accused of different conduct.” via the Post and the Times.
  • Decision Expected This Morning on Trump’s Bogus Presidential Immunity Claim Meanwhile, grotesque Trump adviser Steve Bannon will report to prison today after the court denied to take up his appeal. via the Post and Politico.

Far Right Finishes First in French Parliamentary Elections 

French President Emmanuel Macron, who called a snap election in hopes of cementing his power and blocking the rise of the far-right National Rally party, has emerged weakened from the first round of the process. Pollster’s projections from voting in the French Assembly elections show National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen and her protégé, would-be prime minister Jordan Bardella, in the lead with about 34 percent of the vote. The leftist coalition called the New Popular Front, echoing the anti-fascist bloc of World War II, came in a strong second place, with 29 percent of the vote. Macron’s liberal coalition, meanwhile, is trailing in third place. Turnout was high. There will be a runoff on July 7. Both Macron and leftist leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon are urging their candidates to withdraw from races in which they finished in third place to avoid splitting the vote and gifting the neo-fascists with an absolute majority. This is not good news but it could be worse.
