Another Toxic Train Disaster Strikes in Ohio

For at least the second time in less than two years, a train carrying toxic chemicals has sprung a leak in Ohio, forcing small-town residents to flee. School students in and residents of Cleves, near Cincinnati, were told to evacuate yesterday after an upright railcar began spewing styrene, "a toxic and flammable chemical that is used to make plastic and rubber," which "can cause headaches, nausea and respiratory issues" and, after prolonged exposure, organ damage. Firefighters were spraying the railcar with water last night to keep its temperature down because they fear it might explode. Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that a "lack of transparency" in Environmental Protection Agency rules has made it hard for residents of East Palestine, the site of last year's toxic derailment, to assess their risk of cancer and other serious health problems. "I used to feel like those were agencies to protect people, but I don't feel like that anymore," says one woman who is still living away from home for fear of health risks. "They need to come forth and do the right thing. They know these chemicals just don't go away."

A Texas judge ruled yesterday that the company's assets can be auctioned off to pay the more than $1 billion Jones owes to the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims as damages for defamation and emotional distress. Infowars' intellectual property, including its copyrighted material and websites, may also go up for auction.

PARTING WORDS

"Tonight, Missouri lynched another innocent Black man. When DNA evidence proves innocence, capital punishment is not justice — it is murder.

-- NAACP President Derrick Johnson, in a statement last night on the execution of Marcellus Williams, 55, after the right-wing majority on the Supreme Court declined to issue a stay and Republican Gov. Mike Parson refused to grant clemency. Williams always maintained his innocence and his murder conviction was cast in doubt by his original prosecutor, the family of the victim, and the Midwest Innocence Project, which called attention to how the police mishandled evidence in Williams' case and racial bias during jury selection. In his last words, Williams, a poet who converted to Islam in prison, praised Allah.
